The Bunaken Island Resort approach

  •  The Bunaken Island Resort is highly sensitive of our impact on cultures, economies, communities and environment in which we operate.
  • We are deeply committed to a policy of environmental and social responsibility. We seek to provide exceptional and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment. We aim to protect and revitalise both our natural surroundings and the community in which we operate.
  • We are committed to demonstrating to our hosts, our guests, and the local government that tourism can support a local economy with much more favorable terms than mining, logging, overfishing, or shark fining.
  • We call this the BIR Approach: a driving force in every decision we make and a central source of inspiration as we serve our guests and plan for our surrounding nature to sustain in the future.
  • Thus, in order to develop a sustainable tourism and eco-resort, some key areas we are keen to consider, include:
  • sound financial and business planning environmental management
  • sensitivity to cultural and social dynamics
  • efficient management, training and customer service
  • consideration and inclusion of all stakeholders
  • long term vision and good joined-up governance
  • marketing and communications programs to showcase the positive elements
  • Our experiences, education in tourism and work experience have led us to believe passionately in the principles of sustainable tourism. Hence, the BIR is strongly committed to a policy of environmental responsibility.
  • Therefore, the construction and operation of the resort has been meticulously engineered to minimise our environmental impact. In addition to salvaging driftwood and milling our own lumber, we have engineered our buildings with energy efficiency in mind.
  • We have installed rain-water-collecting-basin to minimise our consumption, we have installed a water filtering system, to collect fresh rain water that is filtered to minimise the usage of this scarce resource.
  • We will be adding to and amending this page as new challenges arise - keep checking back to see our progress.
